Essential Skills Course: More Details

Two full days of practical, workshop-based teaching

Our aim is to inspire you with the joys and creativity of working with leather, and to fully enable you to develop your own practice as a leather craftsperson. Whether you want to create beautiful leather work in your own time, or you’d like to use your abilities for professional purposes, the Essential Skills Course introduces you to traditional saddlery leatherworking techniques using hand tools and naturally tanned leather and combines these transferable practices with the creativity of designing and making leather artifacts from scratch using your own patterns. Your tutors are either professional leatherworkers or Leather School® graduates.

It is worth reiterating that this course focuses on really learning about leather and how to work with it for years to come, rather than just producing a perfect one off product. At the end of the course you will have made two great leather products that you can be proud of, but more importantly you’ll leave the course fully confident in your skills to go much further.

Who is this course aimed at:

The Essential Skills Course is for anyone who wants to get serious about working with leather, professionally, or as a craft hobby. The course is suitable for beginners who know they want to go further than just making a one-off project (such as our In-a-Day Courses), as well as being ideal for participants who have either some experience in related crafts, or those who have dabbled with leather work and want to develop their practice based on tried and tested traditional skills. Many previous students have come to us to learn complimentary skills that they can use in their work as upholsterers, costume and fashion designers, making equipment for animals such as dog leads and equestrian tack, as well as interests in costumes for historical re-enactments and cosplay.

What you will learn on the course:

Student Pack: Before you start the course we will send out information on types of leather with a supplier list and other relevant information to help you source the leather that you want for making future projects.

Day One: We start the day with a session on learning about leather: choosing the right leather; how different leather manufacturing processes influence choices; qualities of different animal skins and how best to use different parts of the hide or skin.

You will make a leather belt using 15 core skills in leather-making based on traditional English bridle making skills from the Midlands which include:

  • Cutting leather from the hide and calculating important measurements
  • Edge-burnishing, buckle-fitting, hole-punching
  • Leather thinning and point-making
  • Stitch marking and hand stitching the saddler’s way with 2 needles

Students wanting to progress in equestrian leatherwork will find this an ideal resource, and the skills learnt will transfer to a huge variety of projects, as you will find on day two. Day One concludes with an introduction to pattern making skills so that you can start to research and plan what to make on day two.

Day Two: Picking up from the introduction to pattern making, each participant will have chosen a project to work on that can be achieved in a day. The first part of the day involves designing your own unique pattern on paper, then card before finally committing to working on leather. If you are not sure what to make we have a number of projects ideas that you can work on to develop and practice your skills.

We have a wide range of leather (styles, colours, textures) that you can choose from to make your project from. Then, using your pattern you’ll cut out your leather and assemble the product using skills learnt on Day One, as well as learning new skills appropriate to your chosen project, such as lining leather and adding different types of fastenings and fittings.

As the day progresses we’ll also give some short presentations on different types of tools not covered on day one and tool sharpening advice.

What is included in the course fee: The cost includes all materials for the belt making on the Day One as well as the Essential Skills Course DVD (this is normally sold separately at £28).

Tools: All tools are provided for the duration of the course.

Refreshments: We provide tea/ coffee and biscuits throughout the course

What’s not included

Day Two Project Materials: Due to the fact that each participant will create a different sized piece on Day Two, the costs for materials cannot be predicted beforehand. Therefore materials including leather, buckles, D rings, fasteners are all individually priced – allow £35-£50 but could cost more depending on size of project and quality of leather which varies a lot in price.

Tools and materials to take away: We run the course using the Starter Tool Kit (link to shop – starter tool kit) which can be bought at the course price £240 (discounted by £25). No additional specialised tools are needed for you to repeat at home what you have learnt in the workshop. We also have a Leather School Shop with a full range of leather and tools to purchase.

Lunch: there are several great options close by or you can bring your own lunch and eat it here in our kitchen area (we have a microwave available to heat food up).

Accommodation: please see Local Accommodation details of places to stay nearby.

Access: Please note that Leather School is located on the first floor of the Tanner Bates Leather Studio and the only access is via stairs.

In-a-day Knife/Axe Sheath Course

Protect and display the finest blade with a beautiful and functional leather sheath

1 Day (10am- 5pm) £105

If you are someone who knows the value of looking after sharp tools, then learning to make a really good leather sheath is likely to appeal to you. As there are so many sizes and shapes of knives and axes, you’ll begin by researching, planning and making a bespoke pattern for your own knife or axe, which you will need to bring to the course. This will include selecting the right leather in terms of strength, thickness and aesthetics that will match the blade itself. You will then learn the skills to cut from your pattern, including the all important protective fillet. Stitch marking is one of the key skills in sheath making because the leather will be quite thick at certain points; it takes patience and a good eye to make the preparations for stitching that will produce a neat and pleasing final result. Depending on your original design, you’ll work on a fastening that could involve a range of solutions from snap fasteners to buckles. Finally the way that you cut, bevel and burnish the edges will be the thing that will make others really notice the craftsmanship that has gone into making your sheath.

The price includes all tuition, tools and materials.

Advanced Tooling Course

Get creative: learn to decoratively design directly onto leather

1 Day (10am- 5pm) £105

With Artist and Designer Karen Blake

You may have seen exquisite designs applied to a leather saddle, or beautiful embellishments on belts and other accessories – the Advanced Leather Tooling Course will show you how it is done and equip you to continue developing this rewarding art and craft in your own time.

The day starts with understanding and practising the process of ‘casing’– using water with vegetable tanned leather to prepare the material for applying designs. You’ll move onto trying out the different tools on a practice piece, including the essential swivel knife and bevel tool to cut and emboss lines and shapes. You’ll also work with patterning tools to give texture to the images that you create. As your skills develop through practice, you’ll create an achievable design on a leather coaster.

Once you have the basic techniques you’ll be introduced to designing your own images and patterns to transfer onto an easy to make leather wallet. This will allow you to start getting creative with the tools and techniques to produce your own unique artistic decorations. You’ll leave the course with several pieces that you have produced, and be inspired and ready to continue this creative practice.
